Choosing the Right Jacket

Due to the changing weather conditions, our dogs need warmth and protection outside. It is best to dress dogs correctly, taking individual needs into account.

Choosing the right jacket is crucial when your dog needs protection from the rain, wind or freezing weather. The Pomppa collection includes four different jackets designed for different weather conditions and for different types of dogs. To be able to find just the right product, first answer the following questions: What is my dog’s fur type? In what kind of weather and activities will the jacket be used the most? This will help you in choosing the right type of jacket.

Choose the gear according to the weather

The Pomppa collection is divided into two categories: rain jackets and winter jackets. The rain jackets SadePomppa and KevytPomppa are perfect for rainy and windy weather, but the thin lining may not be warm enough for the winter. On the other hand, winter jackets PerusPomppa and ToppaPomppa will keep your dog warm even in freezing weather, but the thick teddy-lining may absorb some moisture in the rain. For this reason, always choose your gear according to the weather to get the best possible benefit!

The outer layer on all jackets has a water column value of 5 000 mm, and the fabric has also been treated with a water-repellent coating. In addition, the jackets only have a small number of seams, which increases the water resistance abilities.

While Pomppa jackets may look identical to one another, they differ greatly in lining materials. SadePomppa has a smooth, anti-static lining, which is the lightest and thinnest of the collection. KevytPomppa’s synthetic fur lining is slightly thicker and moderately warm. Both PerusPomppa and ToppaPomppa have a thick and warm teddy-lining, with ToppaPomppa having an efficiently insulating filling inside as well.

Which jacket should I choose for a short-haired or single-coated dog?

Short haired dogs and dogs without an undercoat often need extra warmth well before the temperature drops to zero. Small, slender and elderly dogs, as well as puppies, may also be more sensitive to cold weather, in which case it’s advisable to wear a jacket.

For cold-sensitive dogs, SadePomppa is a great choice during warm rainfall when the dog has to be protected from the rain, wind and dirt. There may not be a need for additional warmth yet but keeping the dog dry and comfortable is crucial. Even a warm wind can bite hard if the dog is soaking wet!

The thin synthetic fur lining in KevytPomppa is a bit warmer than SadePomppa, making it an excellent mid-season jacket. It keeps the dog comfortably warm and protects it from rain, wind and dirt. The lightweight materials of both Pomppa rain jackets make them easy to be carried along in case of a sudden downpour.

PerusPomppa has a warm teddy-lining, which is ideal for cold weather. Short-haired and other more cold-sensitive dogs can use PerusPomppa as a three-season jacket, to protect them all the way from the raw winds of the fall season to the chilly rains of the spring.

The well-insulating cotton padding in ToppaPomppa will get one through even the most arctic conditions during winter. It has a more generous sizing than other Pomppa jackets, so it covers the dog’s muscles from a larger area to keep them as warm as possible. Also, ToppaPomppa is a great choice when standing still for a long period of time, like waiting in the car or in-between training sessions.

The Pomppa collection also includes a warm and flexible sweater JumppaPomppa, which is suitable for cold and dry weather. JumppaPomppa can also be conveniently layered underneath other Pomppa jackets for extra warmth. For example, by adding a JumppaPomppa underneath a SadePomppa, the combination is comparable to KevytPomppa in terms of warming capability.

Which jacket should I choose for a long or thick coated dog?

Dogs with long, thick and dense coat usually tolerate even quite challenging weather conditions well. Although these dogs do not need extra protection the instant the first leaves fall, it’s still a good idea to have a jacket at hand. The undercoat of a thick-haired dog living indoors may not be able to grow dense enough to withstand the freezing weather and raw winds of the winter.

The thin and light SadePomppa is ideal for year-round use. It protects the dog from rain, wind and dirt, but doesn’t have any warming features. It also prevents sand and dirt from entering the house and spares the dog’s skin from excessive washing.

KevytPomppa is best used in the mid-season rain as well as during the first days of winter. It protects the dog from the freezing wind and prevents it from straining the muscles and joints.

PerusPomppa can be used for daily outdoor activities, starting from late fall all the way to the last days of winter. The thick teddy-lining will keep the dog warm even in freezing weather and prevent the icy wind from passing through the fur.

ToppaPomppa is suitable for challenging weather conditions. Due to the generous sizing of the jacket, ToppaPomppa is often used during downtime in-between training performances or while waiting in the car. We recommend refraining from using ToppaPomppa during highly active exercise, as the jacket may get too warm for a thick-coated dog.

One of the most important factors in choosing the right jacket is also choosing the right size. Please note that every dog is an individual and the tolerance for cold may vary greatly depending on the dog’s physical condition, age and state of health. Also remember to take into account the level of activity: during fast-paced and heavy exercise the need for additional warmth is always less than during calm and slow movement. Therefore, always remember to observe your dog during outdoor activities or performances and adapt your gear accordingly!
